On Saturday, December 16th, our parish held a Christmas party for our older parishioners in the hall at Our Lady & the Lancashire Martyrs church. Funded by the parish, staff from Abbeyfield House, Bridgewater Road, provided the catering; musical entertainment came from the St Edmunds Music Group; transport was via the good offices of many volunteer drivers, and the whole event was organised by volunteers from the Gentle Outreach group of the parish Lay Leadership team.
The hall had been transformed by the volunteers into a warm, welcoming scene with beautifully decorated tables laden with the delicious variety of food supplied by Abbeyfield, with hot and cold drinks and mulled wine available for everyone.
Bad weather and illness stopped some people from attending, unfortunately, but all guests were delighted with the afternoon. Apart from the food and the singalong, the chance to chat with folk who do not get out and about very often was much appreciated.
There was a free raffle, with prizes of a food hamper, a bottle of port and chocolates. Each guest received a small gift from the parish and a “goody bag” from Abbeyfield House, who also provided the hamper and the sweets which were offered around during the afternoon.
All in all, a very pleasant afternoon for everyone, thanks to the efforts of all who helped in whatever way. Many thanks to you all.
