Uniformed Groups

Christ the King offers a range of Uniform Groups for both males and females, between the ages of 6 – 14½. Below is a little explanation about the Brownies, Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scouts. 10th Walkden Brownies (Christ the King)

10th Walkden Brownies meet every Wednesday evening (during term time) from 6.30-8pm in Scout Hut on Barnside Avenue, next to church.

We undertake many activities ranging from crafts, games, fund raising and badge work to trips out varying from theme parks to museums. Some meetings take place in the community i.e. Blackleach Country Park and we also take part in bag packing in local supermarkets. We also get involved district guiding events when we join up with other guiding groups in the area. The weekly meetings are varied and are a great opportunity for the girls to make new friends, learn new skills and earn activity badges.

Currently we are working towards the Disability Awareness badge and are arranging for a visitor to come and see us to teach the girls basic sign language and also for a volunteer from Guide dogs for the blind to come along with a puppy in training to explain what a wonderful job they do. We have a trip planned in July to Jodrell bank as the next badge we will complete as a unit is Stargazer. A Brownie holiday has also been arranged for later in the year.

The age range is 7 to 10/11 and all girls are welcome to join us. We always aim to make brownies educational without neglecting the fun element so if anyone is interested in joining please look at the girl guiding UK website and click the ‘join us’ link. Alternatively pop in on a Wednesday and meet the leaders Catherine (Brown Owl) and Liz (Barn Own).

The Beaver Scouts

Beavers (aged 6 – 8 years old)

Beaver Scouts are our youngest members. They meet weekly to take part in a wide range of activities including games, crafts, singing, visits and good turns, along with plenty of outdoor activities. They will also have the opportunity to take part in the fun and excitement of camps and sleepovers.
Beavers: Monday (6.15pm – 7.45pm)

The Cub Scouts

Cubs (aged 8 - 10½ years old)

A Cub Scout Pack has Cub Scouts split into smaller groups called Sixes. Cubs take part in a wide range of activities designed to be interesting and challenging. A Cub Scout meeting consists of games and activities with plenty of time spent outdoors. Camps and holidays are some of the most memorable events of the year for Cubs.
Cubs: Friday (6.00pm – 7.30pm)

The Scouts

Scouts (aged 10½–14 years old)

Each Scout Troop consists of small units of six to eight Scouts called a Patrol, usually led by a Patrol Leader. Outdoor activities feature prominently, with the highlight being camping. Scouts learn various skills, such as map reading, camp cooking and first aid in preparation for camp.

Adult Volunteering

The Scout Association is the UK's largest mixed youth organisation with more than 450,000 members in the UK and more across the world. Our innovative spirit and ability to make things happen plays a vital role in the development of young people everywhere and these available roles will give you the chance to make a big impact on the lives of young people.

There's so much more to Scouting than tying knots.

There are thousands of girls and boys across Greater Manchester on our waiting list who are missing out on the great start in life that Scouting offers simply because we don't have enough volunteers. It's easy to get involved.

Some frequently asked questions about Adult Volunteering:

• Do I really have the skills you need?
  • You don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls to get involved with Scouting. Do you have first aid knowledge? Are you good with numbers? Handy in the kitchen? Or are you a DIY whizz? We all have useful skills and you can volunteer and help in many ways.
• What if I don't have that much spare time?
  • Volunteering is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you. Whether you help out once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, we'll make sure you're properly trained and supported.
• What will I get out of volunteering?
  • As well as gaining externally recognised skills and having a brilliant time, Scouting also offers the chance to build on personal skills, like teamwork, confidence and leadership. A study found that over 90% of our volunteers believe that the skills and experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives.
• My child is in Scouting – is there anything I could do to help?
  • The short answer is yes. Many of our helpers and leaders are parents of our youth members because they’ve seen firsthand how Scouting benefits young people and want to give something back. It’s also a chance to spend more time with your children and learn new skills.
• Are there any age restrictions on helping out?
  • As long as you're over 18, you can help out as an adult volunteer in Scouting. There is no upper age limit for adult volunteers. If you are aged between 14 to 18, there is the option of becoming a Young Leader.
